Fear and uncertainty lead to decision procrastination and a debilitating lack of action as you tell yourself, "I'll get around to it", but you never actually do.

Decidophobia is the fear of making decisions. The term comes from the Latin word ‘decidere,’ meaning “to cut off” or “to decide,” and the Greek word ‘phobos,’ meaning “fear.” It is frequently accompanied by procrastination, indecision, and a tendency to avoid making choices (even those that are trivial). People who suffer from this affliction may go to great lengths to avoid having to make a decision.

Decidophobia can be broken down into three categories:

1) Intense anxiety over making decisions or even thinking about making decisions;

2) A feeling of dread, helplessness, and vulnerability associated with making decisions; and/or

3) Avoidance of situations that require making decisions.

What are the Symptoms of Decidophobia

The symptoms of decidophobia can be very different for each person. Some people may experience a fear of making decisions, and others may fear the consequences of their decisions. Some common signs include:

• Being very indecisive
• Fear of making a wrong decision
• Avoiding making decisions at all costs
• Procrastination and putting off making decisions until the last minute
• Tension, anxiety, panic attacks, or other symptoms when faced with a decision

So, to overcome the "fears" you may have about buying a house and land package you must ask yourself two questions:

• What do I fear about committing to this purchase?
• How realistic are those fears?

Sure, your feeling of fear is real, but it doesn't have to be paralysing.

In fact, there are a number of strategies to help you overcome the fear of investing including:

1. Only listen to people who actually know what they're talking about - as a general observation many Financial Advisors do not have the knowledge to advise on House and land packages or the direct investment in property by clients. (I was a financial advisor in a past life, and the amount of time spent on mastering Direct Investment in Property was almost non-existent)

2. Understand the media's love of sensational headlines - as this sells newspapers, or airtime, or gets Clicks on their Social Media account.

3. You don't need to know everything before you get make the decision to get started

4. Protect yourself with risk management - always have a plan for the worst case scenario, and for the best case scenario.

5. Understand the biggest risk you will face is - inaction (the best time to buy property was 20 years ago, the next best time is now!)

Sadly, the facts are, that around 20% of those who get involved in property investment sell up in the first year, and close to half sell their property in the first five years. And of those investors who stay in property, about 92% never get past owning 1 or 2 properties.
